Supernatural Winged Shadow Projector

Crappy cardboard model constructed for the new redesign of my Supernatural angel blade stand/winged shadow projector project. It’s not to any scale and all the dimensions are wrong, it was just faster to glue cardboard together than it was to learn how to draw a decent 3D diagram or find a pencil. This is a unit that will hopefully display my angel blade prop replica and cast this wing pattern in shadow, replicating the effect in this scene of the tv show.

The front. Super boring looking, this would be gloss black and have a metal plaque with the show name/logo, the name of the prop, and Castiel’s “I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition” quote.
The top would obviously need to be bigger to support the blade, and would have little grips on it to support the blade horizontally across it, like a regular sword stand.

The side view. The front is flat, whereas the back panel is at a steep angle. The sides/top/base/front are enclosed, probably in wood.

The back. The glue isn’t dry so it looks particularly horrible but illustrates the idea. The wing pattern will be cut out of opaque vinyl and stuck onto an angled sheet of glass or clear acrylic that will form the back panel. It’s slanted heavily, so that a series of flickering LEDs set into the base throw directional light upwards against it and project the wing pattern as a shadow up, and behind the stand.

I’ll have to do a lot of testing to find the right light source, the right combination and placement and direction for the light, to cast the size/clarity/position of the shadow I want. I’m thinking about using a breadboard circuit with a mixture of diffused flickering LEDs in a warm white and regular LEDs, with – ideally – a line of regular LEDs and a 3-function switch to go from flicker, to solid light, to off. Part of the base will likely cut-away so I can lift off the unit to access the battery compartment. Any electronics will be housed between the front panel and the LEDs so they don’t interfere with the shadow, and I might have to use metallic tape or build a small canopy over the lights to get the shadow where I want it.

Still, this is the basic concept with a new, better, enclosed, simpler design and I’m excited about the prospect.
